USFS FAM Launches Next Generation Enterprise Geospatial Portal: WildFireSA (Beta)

The Wildland Fire community relies on a range of tools, blending data, visualization, analytics, and experiential knowledge to guide decision-making. The United States Forest Service Fire and Aviation Management (USFS FAM) and National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) provides solutions to optimize wildfire suppression, control fires in a coordinated manner, provide science-based software to assess fire risk, evaluate the impact of action, safely use firefighters, support and build effective partnerships at all levels, and incorporate improved technology.

The USFS FAM and NIFC is proud to announce the launch of WildFireSA (Beta), the next generation of Enterprise Geospatial Portal (EGP) - the only Interagency Wildland Fire Near Real-Time Common Operating Picture providing the most comprehensive Situational Awareness. This major upgrade to the SA application you know and trust, is built by fire professionals, for fire professionals, and continues to evolve to meet the growing demands of fire operations across the country.

EGP WildfireSA features comprehensive tools designed to significantly enhance situational awareness and decision-making capabilities for users monitoring wildfire incidents. These updates integrate authoritative systems such as IRWIN, DART, IROC, NIROPS, FireGuard, and many others, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information from trusted sources. This enhanced application empowers users to quickly identify, visualize, and share actionable data — without the need to search across multiple platforms.

Key enhancements include:

  • Comprehensive Incident View: Users now have access to a unified view of wildfire incidents from multiple authoritative systems, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making capabilities.
  • Personalized Situational Views: The ability to create tailored maps with filtered layers and incident-centric zooms improves efficiency and focus during operations.
  • Quick Access to Essential Metrics: Incident-level metrics, red flag warnings, containment status, and environmental overlays are now readily available, enabling faster response times and better-informed decisions.
  • Improved Collaboration: Users can share incidents via links, with maps automatically zooming to the incident location and displaying details in the incident panel, facilitating coordinated responses.
  • Enhanced Cartographic Features: Hundreds of updates to symbology, labels, time refresh, grouping, transparency, pop-ups, and zoom levels ensure the most accurate and easily interpretable data.
  • Advanced Features for WildfireSA Advanced Users: Key metrics in the incident panel, support for 2D and 3D views, grouped common layers, pin sharing, data layer integration from files and URLs, map export capabilities, and a new Data Catalog for managing layers. Airborne Intel is now organized with active incidents for better accessibility. Users can directly see if an incident has airborne data within the incident card in the incident panel.
  • Stakeholder Designed Common Operating Picture: Data as an Interagency Authoritative source for Active Incidents, Satellite Fire Detections, FireGuard near real-time heat point and polygon detection, real-time camera viewshed, Airborne Intel Imagery and Video within minutes of acquisition. Includes Advanced Geospatial ETL Processing for dozens of complex integrated sensitive data to support aviation and fire operation resources in decision-making, aviation mission planning, and basic indicators.

In response, the EGP WildFireSA is purpose-built for mission impact. It delivers timely, relevant, and actionable geospatial intelligence to help safeguard lives, protect property, and preserve critical natural resources.

EGP WildfireSA touches the lives of all users each day by providing critical information and tools for wildfire monitoring and response.
